Strengthening provision of hay-making services
Machinery service providers exist in most reasonably sized villages and own one or two old tractors and some machinery, usually for cultivation such as ploughs and tine cultivators but also some old balers in various states of repair. The replacement cost of machinery is high and in most case prohibitive. The cost of credit through formal banks is also high (16-25%), and most lenders see lending to agribusinesses as too risky and require property in the regional capital as collateral. This case study presents two phases of intervention in strengthening machinery service provision between 2009 and 2011 primarily by addressing the high cost of capital for machinery investment by small service providers.
